Sony Ericsson's Mobile Answer to the Nintendo Wii
Thursday 19 Jun 2008 : 00:00 AM
Just when we think the final generation of mobile phone technology has arrived, up pops another one. With the phone manufacturers in such a competitive market, they are all striving to get one step ahead. Well, here we go, Sony Ericsson has produced the F305. Whilst it sounds like a fighter plane, rest assured it is not. Sony Ericsson appears to have pushed their love of the Nintendo Wii into the phone range.

So a little more about the Sony Ericsson F305 slider-phone. The main thing to notice is the built-in motion sensor which enables the F305 to react like the Wii controller. Sony Ericsson have included three main games that can utilise the motion sensor device, ‘Bowling’, ‘Bass Fishing’ and ‘Jockey. I think we can safely assume there will also be some standard games on the handset too. Another new feature is the CPP-100 power pack which boost the phone’s battery if you aren’t near a mains socket.

Apart from this, the F305 is pretty standard and has the usual features we’ve come to expect from a mobile phone. Whilst it may seem an exciting and innovative idea, we believe more thought could have been put into it. The main thing being that a normal Wii is played on a large TV screen and not a 2 inch phone display. Can you see where I’m going with this? Yes, that’s right, if the motion sensor is in the phone and the screen is on the phone, how on earth are you going to clearly see what’s happening during the game if you’re waving the handset about, not to mention that a mobile phone isn’t the cheapest thing to drop on the floor or slam up against a wall.

Whilst we are impressed with the concept of Wii type gaming on a mobile, maybe it would be better to have a remote control as a separate accessory.

Anyway, for those of you who are still keen to get your hands on the Sony Ericsson F305, ND Mobiles have been advised it will hit the streets in quarter 3 of 2008. However, Sony Ericsson has given no indication of the price as yet.
Police officers to use the Blackberry 8310 Curve
Friday 06 Jun 2008 : 00:00 AM
Thames Valley Police Force has revolutionised their communication channels by issuing officers with Blackberry mobile phone devices. The fresh initiative is an attempt to keep as many officers out on the streets as possible instead of spending time returning to the station to perform administrative duties.

The Blackberry 8310 Curve phone will be given to 1,100 police officers. The cost of the scheme is to be funded by the Home Office and National Policing Improvement Agency. A spokesman for RIM confirmed that the police force has 143,000 officers and half of them currently have a Blackberry Mobile Phone.

The key to the devices being taken on by Thames Valley was the public security. Public Sector Sales Manager of RIM Graham Baker said: ‘Security is not an add-on. The data stored is encrypted and can be wiped remotely.’
Baker also highlighted that BlackBerry Smartphones are the only mobile devices to be accredited for use with up to ‘restricted’ level data by CESG, the UK government’s national security body.
The Blackberry device will be on the Orange network and will enable officers to access the following via the Police National Computer:

• Look up video witness and custody photographs
• The missing persons database
• The warrant database
• Court orders
• Bail information

Whilst the police offers phones are on Orange, the Blackberry 8310 Curve is also available on the O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone networks at ND Mobiles.
ND Bring you a peek at the new Samsung L870
Tuesday 03 Jun 2008 : 00:00 AM
Samsung have announced plans to launch the Samsung L870 adding to their fantastic ever growing slider-phone range and more recently, the F490 and F480 Tocco. The first thing to notice about the L870 is its similar looks to the Nokia N95 8GB. The L870 slider design hides the keypad with a curvy, rounded off casing.

Samsung has placed a lot of emphasis on equipping the users of the L870 with a handset capable of easy and fast internet browsing. This can be seen with the inclusion of a large screen and very fast HSDPA data speeds. Samsung has installed a Symbian V9.3 operating system and a Safari web browser which are normally only found on products such as the Apple iPhone.

Thanks to the Symbian operating system, the users can customise their mobile phone by accessing some of the many applications available on the internet. Amongst Samsung’s usual comprehensive feature list are various business features such as Checkit task manager, contact management system, business card recognition and a document viewer so whether it’s work or play, you will always be in control with the Samsung L870.

Further features of the L870 are listed below:

• 3 megapixel camera
• 3G with HSDPA
• FM Radio and MP3 player for music and videos
• Comprehensive phonebook and contact management system
• Push email
• Symbian V9.3 operating system

Samsung has not given a firm release date for the L870 but it is imminent so keep an eye out for its arrival at ND Mobiles.
A Legal Solution to Unlocking Nokia Handsets?
Friday 23 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
Stoke based Mobile Phone Solutions claims it has developed the world’s only direct BB5 unlocking station.

Back in April, unlockers claimed to have made the first ever BB5 direct unlocking solution for high-end Nokia devices. However, within a matter of days they were uncovered as a bunch of hackers that had infiltrated Nokia’s systems. In no time at all, Nokia found the access origin and closed down their servers so the hackers could not access the log files required.

Mobile Phone Solutions are not hackers and claim to have a completely legitimate solution to unlocking Nokia handsets in a device called the DM3BOX. The company claim they can unlock Nokia handsets without the need for the internet or Nokia’s assistance.

Mobile Phone Solutions began the project two-and-a-half years ago and say the project completed on September 7th last year. Without providing specific technical details, the company advised there are a handful of secret boxes around the world capable of unlocking handsets such as the N95 8GB, N81 8GB, N82 and 6500 Classic and Slide. They also claim that they can unlock a handset in less than 10 seconds using a data lead from the DM3BOX to the handset without the need to dismantle the handset.

Mobile Phone Solutions has split its price range into three bands:

Band A - (N95 8GB, N81 8GB, N82, 8800 Arte) - £15.99
Band B - (6500 Slide and Classic, N95, 5610 Xpress Music) - £11.99
Band C - (5300 Xpress Music, 6300, 8600 Luna and N91) - £5.99

The company guarantee the device is 100% safe and will void any warranty on the handset. They also claim the device is capable of repairing some phones that have been damaged through attempts to illegally unlock them.
A Mobile Phone Solutions spokesman said: “This is unique in the world – there is no other system. We’re getting hundreds of calls and emails daily asking for us to travel around the globe with our system.
“We’re also getting stacks of calls and emails asking for us to sell the system, but we don’t intend to ever sell the solution.
“History has shown that when systems similar to ours are sold, the first thing others try to do is copy them so to prevent this, the DM3BOX has high levels of security in-built and is only handled by a few chosen people.
“The system can also lock handsets to any network, and with the growth in MVNO markets, we see an opportunity to work with these networks and help them protect their contract and prepay subsidies. We’re
also interested in talking more closely with them, and distributors – not just in the UK, but on a global basis too.”
Nokia and Orange Team Up
Thursday 22 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
Orange and Nokia have extended their original agreement in February for a further three years. The new deal includes an agreement for 10 new Nokia mobile devices to Orange and the addition of music to a combined offer of games, maps and location based services.

The partnership plan to launch a suite of multimedia services on the new handsets, across nine major markets. This approach is intended to increase the mobile digital entertainment aspect of the market.

All services are to be integrated into the Orange user interface so customers will have access to the Orange Music Store, Nokia Maps and NGage games.

The joint venture will see the two companies marketing the launch of the new handsets and development of multimedia applications. Nokia’s Mobile Maps platform and GPS technology will be spread across a large portfolio of Nokia handsets within the Orange range. By 2010 Nokia and Orange aim to create 10 million active Mobile Maps users on Nokia devices.

Orange personal communications services executive vice president Olaf Swantee said: "This collaboration underlines Orange's drive to create strategic partnerships that will give customers the best possible mobile multimedia experience in the simplest way."

Orange group strategic marketing executive vice president added: "Orange believes that Nokia's devices and Ovi platform will make a powerful environment for the provision of a joint range of services."
UK Online Auctions Targeted for Counterfeit Mobiles
Wednesday 21 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
UK online auctions are being swamped with unofficial mobile phone products according to online brand-monitoring specialist NetNames. Research by NetNames revealed 1505 unofficial mobile products were sold on ebay.co.uk in one week.

Whilst only one in five of the products on offer were from the Far East, some of those advertising are selling hundreds of items each increasing fears that the products are cheap, poor-quality copies.

The most targeted handsets were the LG Viewty, Samsung F700 and Nokia N95 being offered in the thousands and all offered unlocked from any network. NetNames reported that in one week there were 2,250 different sellers of the Nokia N95 handsets and batteries on offer.

The N95 is reported as the worst for having individual sellers with disproportionate numbers. There were 325 LG Viewty handset sellers with small amounts each and all based in the UK. As with the LG Viewty, the Samsung F700 has all the sellers based in the UK and not selling large amounts each. The maximum amount for any seller of the Samsung F700 and LG Viewty was four items during the period researched.

Chief operating officer of Netnames, Jonathan Robinson advised: ‘Manufacturers – even if they decide not to act on the information – at least need to be aware of and monitor the counterfeiting of their goods.

‘If a consumer has a bad experience with a product with your branding on it, it will not necessarily occur to them that it is counterfeit, it will simply create a negative perception which can quickly spread across product reviews, blogs and other social media creating untold brand damage.’

A spokeswoman for Nokia said: ‘Nokia takes all possible steps to protect its customers, consumers and business from counterfeit activity. Our enforcement activities are continuous and on a global scale.

‘This is unfortunately a serious issue that affects many companies with successful products.’

All mobile phones at ND Mobiles are genuine manufacturer originals supplied by the official networks.
Sony Ericsson team up with R&B singer Usher
Friday 16 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
Sony Ericsson are set to launch an exclusive brand marketing campaign that has seen them team up with the Grammy award winning R&B artist Usher.

Sony has seen their performance in Europe struggle in recent times. However, they have a coup by getting headline sponsorship rights for Usher’s full European tour later in the year. Sony already has a specialised range of top music mobile phones but they plan to target the campaign at two handsets to be launched this year, the W350 and W980 Walkman.

Sony Ericsson music marketing manager John Bernard said: "Working with an artist such as Usher is an ideal fit for us. Here we are at the start of an electrifying launch campaign, poised to deliver a totally 360 degree experience for all consumers and Usher fans alike - it's truly an exciting prospect.
"With clear audio technology on Sony Ericsson handsets we have moved to the next level of music on your mobile with the increased quality of the listening experience. Coupled with great design on the 2008 line up of products, the partnership is a great showcase to highlight the Sony Ericsson range."

The campaign that links the Sony phone manufacturer and the Sony BMG music label will launch at the IndigoO2 venue in Greenwich on May 22.

As ND Mobiles deal directly with all the phone networks we are sure to stock the handsets as soon as they are available…………..keep your eyes peeled!!
Apple iPhone unlocked
Thursday 15 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
Sources have revealed that the iPhone is to spread its wings by the end of the year. Reports suggest that it will be available in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore and the Philippines. This move breaks away Apple’s usual exclusive agreements. However, the SingTel version will be exclusive to the Philippines and Singapore. Optus is going to be the service provider in Australia and Rogers the provider in Canada.

The question we have at ND Mobiles is will they be taking the 2G iPhone or wait for the updated 3G version? Given the timescales and the fact the 2G stock levels are depleting, our guess is that they will wait for the 3g version.

Revenues from the iPhone have been less than expected and Apple have had their backs to the wall due to reports of Iphone handsets being unlocked and sold in Austria and Germany during 2007. Then in February of this year, 10% of the Iphone’s in China were being operated unlocked. France are the only country legally allowed to seel the iPhone unlocked and they are supplied by Orange. However, due to disappointing sales across Europe, Apple have allowed Telecom Italia Mobile to sell the handsets unlocked.

With websites offering to unlock the iPhone for a mere £29.00 and the massive demand for the 3G iPhone, Apple will have needed to make them as secure as possible.
RIM to release the Blackberry Bold Smartphone
Tuesday 13 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
Blackberry has added to its growing family of Smartphone’s with the addition of the Blackberry Bold. However, there is a difference in this latest release is their first handset to support HSDPA networks across the globe. The look and feel of the ‘Bold’ is a step up for Blackberry with a satin chrome casing, leather backplate and new user interface.

Another step forward for the Blackberry Bold comes with their sharpest screen resolution to date enabling viewing images and documents a whole lot better. Speaking of documents, the ‘Bold’ comes with pre-loaded DataViz Documents to Go suite so users can download Microsoft Word, Excell and Powerpoint files and edit them directly on their mobile. Storing your files isn’t an issue as the phone has a 1GB internal memory.

The Blackberry Bold isn’t lacking when it comes to entertaining features either. Firstly, there is a 2 megapixel camera which has a built-in flash, 5x digital zoom and video recording capability. Secondly, there is built-in MP3 player to manage all your music and a Blackberry Media Sync application so you can sync your iTunes digital music with the phone. Other management software includes Roxio Media Manager and Roxio Photosuite.

As with most of the Blackberry Mobile Phone’s there is also push email and a QWERTY keypad that comes with integrated GPS and Wi-Fi.

It’s expected that The Blackberry Bold will be available in the UK by the start of the summer.
RIM president and co-chief executive Mike Lazaridis said: “The new BlackBerry Bold represents a tremendous step forward in business-grade smartphones and lives up to its name with incredible speed, power and functionality, all wrapped in a beautiful and confident design”
3 introduce video glasses
Thursday 01 May 2008 : 00:00 AM
3 has widened its accessory range with an unusual addition in the Vuzix Video Glasses . Whilst you may look like something from a sci-fi movie, the glasses actually improve your view tremendously and will enable you to view your mobile display as a 62 inch screen.

The Vuzix iWear video glasses were launched in some 3 stores and online during April and give you the opportunity to watch videos without having to squint at the screen. Whilst they will work with any AV-out device, 3 are keen to get customers using them on capable mobile devices such as the Nokia N95.

The glasses have an integrated LCD display that create a feeling that the screen is floating in front of you and because they are so thin you are at little risk of bumping into things whilst wearing them. Enjoy the ultimate sound experience with stereo speakers and headphones. One single charge will provide you with up to 5 hours continuous use.
Here’s the draw back, the iWear glasses will cost a cheeky £199.95. So the question you need to consider is are you prepared to pay that sort of dough to look like a new age Star Trek character?
Motorola poor results leave a reliance on the Motorola RIZR Z10
Friday 25 Apr 2008 : 00:00 AM
Motorola has released the Z10 in a hope that its mobile social networking feature will increase sales to increase their next set of financial results.

Motorola has posted poor first quarter results this week which have slipped considerably on the same period last year. Motorola believe the release of the RIZR Z10 and further releases will push the return of Motorola.

Motorola Director of Applications and e-solutions, Andrew Till said: "The key message is that we understand this market has changed. You will see that come through in our next lot of financial results. In the mid and upper tier we recognise we have had to step up, and we have made a lot of public statements about that. But this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the products we are launching and how people are going to use these services.”

O2 stores are the first to provide the Z10 to customers and it’s set to expand into a wider sales channel next month. Motorola are hopeful that the video editing suite and links to social networking sites will be an attraction for mobile phone users.

As an added bonus the Motorola RIZR Z10 comes pre-loaded with The Bourne Supremacy following the give away of The Bourne identity on the RIZR Z8.

Not being one’s to hang around, ND Mobiles is ready and waiting for those customers who fancy trying out the latest Motorola revolution.
O2 to slash the price of the Apple iPhone by £100
Tuesday 15 Apr 2008 : 00:00 AM
New has leaked that O2 are set to announce a price reduction of the Apple iPhone.

The iPhone currently costs £269 but there is an expected announcement tomorrow that O2 are to cut the cost of the handset by £100, reducing the cost of the phone to £169 which is a significant drop in the price. This reduction follows T-Mobile's decision to cut the cost of the iPhone from £315 to £78 in Germany.

Reports suggest that supplies of the iPhone are running low in the US, France and the United Kingdom but are not being replenished which has led to speculation that the release of the 3G version is imminent.

This is a much appreciated further saving to the customers following the tariff changes made by O2 in February which saw them increase their £35 per month tariff from 200 minutes and 200 texts to 600 minutes and 500 texts.

You can view all deals and tariffs for the Apple iPhone at ND Mobiles.

Reports suggest Samsung are planning to release 8 megapixel camera phones
Friday 04 Apr 2008 : 00:00 AM
Gadget review company Electronica has recently reported that Samsung are working on the production of an amazingly thin 8 megapixel camera.

We thought Okay, not really that interesting but then we read further into the article to discover that not only is it going to used just as a digital camera but it’s also planned to be used in their mobile phones. Imagine that, an 8 megapixel camera on your mobile that is actually a real digital camera. We think this will have a revolutionary impact on the mobile market and force the other mobile manufacturers to follow suit as soon as they can.

Essentially, this means that the camera phone has caught up with the digital camera which is fantastic news for us mobile users and even better than that, it will humble the critics who constantly insist camera phones are nowhere as good as digital cameras.

Right, shall we get into the specifications? Well you won’t believe this but the camera module Samsung are producing measures in at an incredible 1.5 centimetres across and is only 7.5mm thick. Put that into comparison terms and it means that it is slightly thicker than a pencil in width. It’s not all about appearances though as we need it to produce quality imaging. With ISO1600 low-light sensitivity it will work in the darkest of venues. Other features include anti-blur, noise correction and for when you take portrait shots it has facial and smile recognition. It’s quite simply unbelievably powerful for its size.

Unfortunately, there has not been any confirmation on release dates as yet but don’t be shocked if you see it at ND Mobiles in the latter part of 2008.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone Sales Slip
Tuesday 25 Mar 2008 : 00:00 AM
Sony Ericsson Sales Slow

Sony Ericsson have admitted that quarter 1 results may show that profits have more than halved since sales of its feature-rich music phones have slowed down. The company has been experiencing a shortage of key components in recent times.

Sony Ericsson revealed in its 2007 annual financial report (published March 2008) that "strategy has been effective and should not be changed. With shares down 8%, shares in Sony Ericsson have lost over 66% of their value in the last six months. Many analysts put the share's decline down to a lack of growth in sales of mid-market and high-end mobile phones.

World Mobile Congress - Barcelona 2008
Monday 11 Feb 2008 : 00:00 AM
Robert Redford is one of the star attractions at the annual World Mobile Congress (formerly 3GSM) at Barcelona this week. The main mobile operators, content solution providers and mobile manufacturers will seek to raise the profile of the mobile industry in Barcelona. Redford is actually due to speak during one of the conference sessions; he'll be talking about the possibility of making movies specifically for mobile phones. Nokia have already made use of one such opportunity when they launched the Nokia N95 8GB mobile phone with Spiderman 3 already loaded on to the phone. - That's what interests Robert Redford. He's starred in movies like Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid, All The President's Men and has directed films including Ordinary People. His speech is likely to highlight the possibility of displaying movie trailers to consumers. Most analysts recognise that there is likely to be little demand for full length productions on mobile devices....yet.

As with previous years, the conference will debate how much the mobile device can achieve. Many of the mobiles on show will boast of huge memory capabilities, and stake a claim to compete with the over-crowded digital music market.

"It could finally become a credible alternative to the stand-alone music player," said Ben Wood, CCS Insight.

Dolby's new surround sound for mobiles will be a hot feature at the congress. Rumour has it that it will use Barcelona to announce deals with Texas Instruments, Symbian, RMI and ARM.

Mobile operators are likely to further examine the opportunities to make more money from mobile advertising. In the UK alone there has been strong growth in new networks like Blyk offering a free network to 16-24 year olds in return for advertising.

The congress will also predict a stream of iPhone "copies", examine the growth of mobile broadband and consider how users can be encouraged to upgrade their mobile phone on a regular basis. Interestinly, there will be many seminars devoted to looking at the mobile's new role as a social networking device.
O2 Improves iPhone Deals
Thursday 31 Jan 2008 : 00:00 AM
O2, fresh from media criticism regarding poor value consumer offers on the Apple iPhone, has dramatically improved the amount of minutes and texts it offers with their flagship product.

This exciting news has meant that the £35 tariff now comes with 600 minutes and 500 texts (it was 200 minutes and 200 texts previously). The £45 tariff has now been improved to 1200 minutes and 500 texts (it was 600 minutes and 500 texts previously).

O2 has improved the iPhone deal after slower than expected sales post-launch. The price of the iPhone (currently £270) has not been reduced, and an O2 spokesperson said there were no immediate plans to look at reducing the up front cost of purchase.

O2 has confirmed that all iPhone customers who purchased before February 1st will automatically have their tariffs upgraded to reflect the better value deals.

ND Mobiles View

The iPhone tariffs are now closer to packages widely available by other operators in the £35 tariff bracket. This is an important area for O2, because over 70% of the UK contract market is based around this type of tariff.
Apple Sell Over 2 Million iPhone's In 2007 Q4
Wednesday 23 Jan 2008 : 00:00 AM
The Apple iPhone sales figures were announced today. Apple claim to have sold over 2 Million iPhones world-wide during the final quarter of 2007.

Looking at the UK results for the iPhone, it appears that both O2 and Carphone Warehouse missed their aggressive sales targets. Apple refused to comment.

Apple have set themselves the target of selling 10 Million in the products first year. This now looks extremely unlikely. However, Apple's first foray into the mobile phone market seems to have been worthwhile. The company has just posted its best ever financial performance in terms of both revenue and profit. Their revenue for 2007 Q4 was £4.9 Billion whilst profit was £800 Million.....a figure that shows an improvement of £300 Million compared to like-for-like sales during the same period last year.

December Figures Show Nokia Ahead of Sony Ericsson
Thursday 10 Jan 2008 : 00:00 AM
Nokia moved ahead of Sony Ericsson in the ulttra-competitive Christmas handset market according to UK retail sources.

One of the major factors was the fact that the UK phone networks were willing to give extra subsidy onto the Nokia 6300 mobile phone in the run up to Christmas.

Sony Ericsson reportedly had a 27.7% market share in December has made an active effort to push their handsets towards contracts and upper to mid-range pay as you go mobiles.

Both Nokai and Sony Ericsson had seen a dip in November due to the iPhone launch, but have returned to normal levels soon after the iPhone impact had faded away.

Pay as you go mobile phone sales had lifted the UK mobile market to almost 1 Million sales in the final week before Christmas.

Prepay sales lifted the whole UK mobile market to almost a million sales in the final week before Christmas.
